This usually means the keeps (strike plates) have shifted in the frame due to seasonal expansion, or the lock faceplate has worn where the deadbolt throws. - Daylight visible around the perimeter when the door is closed and locked. The compression weatherstrip has flattened past recovery, or the door has settled on its hinges and no longer meets the frame square. Either way, the impact rating is compromised; the door cannot stop a projectile if air is passing through.
- Water staining at the bottom of the hinge jamb after heavy rain. The sill pan or subsill flashing has failed, or the door bottom sweep has torn. On west-facing openings near Lake Lucerne City Park, we’ve seen this accelerate when lawn irrigation hits the threshold daily.
- The door drags on the threshold or rubs the head jamb. Hinge screws have backed out of the composite frame, or the hinge barrel has worn and the slab has dropped. A dragging door will destroy the sweep and the threshold cap in about six months if left alone.
- Corrosion on the exterior handle or lock cylinder. CGI’s coastal-grade hardware holds up better than most, but no finish survives salt air indefinitely once the clear coat is compromised. We see this first on south and east exposures in Miramar, where morning sun bakes salt residue into the metal.

DIY or Call Us?
There is safe checking, and there is unsafe work. A homeowner can verify the series label, measure slab thickness, and photograph the hardware bore pattern; that information saves us time and saves you a return trip. What we do not recommend: removing a multipoint lock from an impact-rated door without supporting the slab, or attempting to re-machine hinge mortises in a composite frame. The slab on a CGI Estate weighs roughly 140 pounds; one dropped corner and the glass lite is compromised, the impact rating is void, and the door is scrap.
We also do not recommend swapping hardware between series based on visual similarity. A Sentinel lock body will not align with Estate keeps, and forcing it will oval the screw holes in the frame.
